First Job as a Divemaster ¿What to Expect?

Congratulations !!! after all your effort and money investment you are finally ready to win some money for one of the things you love the most… SCUBA diving. Right know you may be really intrigued thinking about the different things the stores will ask you to do, so here are some of the basic things a dive center could require from you.

1.- Store hours

You are finally ready to take people diving but… you have to get some people first. Chances are the dive center have several professional divers of different levels, so at first you will have to be at the store trying to sell some dives.

2.- Nonprofit dives

Before you can take people diving to some specific site you have to dive it several times. So, it is common the dive center sends you diving with another guide so you can help and get to know the different sites.

3.-Your own equipment

In order to work in most dive center, you're require to own your own equipment. In others, they will "lend" you the equipment discounting it from your paycheck.

4.- Professional mule

Some of the most interesting things you will be doing is helping in the different courses your dive center offer. So, prepare to carry a lot of tanks while the instructor is explaining to the clients what to expect from the dive.

5.- Tank filling

One of the most tedious things to do around a dive center is tanks filling. So, prepare to have a free lesson of how to fill tanks so you can do it all afternoon.

6.- Extras

The diving centers need several other things apart from divers like electricians, painters, carpenters, etc. So, prepare to do some work that doesn't involve diving in the low season.

After a while you will get use to it an if you have a good attitude the dive center will start giving you different jobs and opportunities so you can grow while working. It can be hard sometimes, but it is totally worth it.
