Top 5 Diving Books Recommended for Beginners

Top 5 Diving Books Recommended for Beginners

There is so much SCUBA diving information out there, that it's quite absurd to stay only with your agency manual. Here I list the top 5 SCUBA diving book I use for my Open Water level courses.

1.- Doing it Right: The Fundamentals of Better Diving

This is a great modern diving book by Jarrod Jablonski whose intention is to take the technical diving philosophy to a more approachable level. He talks about good diving without separating between the different levels the agencies have impose. Some of the content includes: solid foundations, equipment, configurations, accident analysis and much more.

2.- Por Debajo de la Cota Cero (Below the zero level)

This is one of the best SCUBA diving theory books I have ever had. It was written by Luis Ávila Secatero and it includes a great amount of information. It is easy to understand making it useful for any level of recreational diving. Some of the content includes anatomy, physiology, decompression tables, first aid, technical diving, submarine technology, altitude dives, drugs and much more.

3.- El Acuanauta Universitario (The University Aquanaut)

This is a manual written by Jack Baron Tapia which includes basic diving theory and exercises. Here I have found information about different variables of recreational diving that I haven’t found anywhere else. It's a very authentic simple book that describes Jack's course.

4.- Manual F.M.A.S de Buceo Una estrella (F.M.A.S. manual of First Star diving)

This is a CMAS manual written by Emilio González Zamorano for the first recreational diving level. It's a nice short manual that only includes basic information about equipment, anatomy, physiology, physics and other basic stuff. I use this because is it quite simple for non-divers to understand and have all the basics.

5.- PADI Open Water Diver Manual

This is the basic PADI manual instructors give to their students to learn the basic theory about SCUBA diving. One of the things PADI does best is selling their stuff, so this manual is very well described for an international audience. This manual includes equipment, communication, decompression limit tables and other basics.
