The 5 Tips for New Diving Instructors

5 Tips for New Diving Instructors

Everyday recreational divers decide they want to become diving instructors and they will notice it is much more difficult that what they expected. At this point their minds are full of knowledge waiting to get out in the best way possible. Some tips to help the new instructors get into the game the best way they can are list next !!!!

1.- Remember when you started

It happens that after a while being a professional diver you stop getting excited by the "little things" like breathing under water or getting your first signature. Always remember this may be the first time for your students and make them enjoy this little thing.

2.- You guide your students’ feelings

Always remember the students are there mostly because they want to, and they don't know what's normal. If you get angry because a regulator is malfunctioning, your divemaster forgot a mask or anything like that, your students will get angry as well. Don't over express your feeling. This makes you look weak and it appears like you are giving a bad quality course.

3.- Don't get use to give 2-3 day courses

In this globalized world people mainly get their diving certification on holidays, so the training must be optimized, and this mainly means the amount of days shorten. In consequence there are a lot of divers out there that doesn't have a good enough technique to be safe underwater. I understand that the students actually like the efficiency of having a 2-3 day course and that the diving center likes it too, but that shouldn't be the priority. My suggestion is to make an at least 8 day training, when possible. Remember there are places that give a 24 day course to their students in order to get the Open Water level.

4.- Practice buoyancy and position

Most of the divers out there have a lot of buoyancy and position problems and that's is because of the instructors. Most of the student tend to stand because they feel more comfortable, so we don't correct them till it's too late. I recommend starting the training with a little bit of propulsion, buoyancy and position; and after that, try to maintain your students in a good position throughout the different tasks. This will be much harder at the beginning but it’s worth it in the long run.

5.- Go a little bit further

Every student is different, and s/he will be interested more in some aspects than anothers. Try to give a little bit extra when the students capability allows you. This will make the lessons much more fun for you and the student.
